Empowering Classrooms in Fiji: New Program Brings Australian Teachers to Support Local Schools

Korotogo, Fiji – A new initiative is bridging borders to strengthen literacy, numeracy, and STEM education in Fiji’s schools. The Fiji Teachers Support Program, launched this month, will see Australian teachers travel to Sigatoka to provide much-needed support to local educators and students — starting with a grassroots connection and a vision for long-term impact.

Spearheaded by Julie Armstrong, an Australian educator with deep family ties to Fiji and a home in Korotogo Village, the program was born out of a desire to give back. “Spending time in the region and speaking with teachers, it became clear that support in core subjects like literacy and numeracy was urgently needed,” said Julie. “I reached out to my network of passionate teachers in Australia — and the response was overwhelming.”

The program invites Australian teachers to spend part of their school holidays in Fiji — a time that aligns with the Fijian school term. Participants will stay in Julie’s family home in Korotogo Village, where they will live with her family, enjoy home-cooked meals, and immerse themselves in the local community.

Teachers will work directly with local Fijian educators, delivering small group student activities, sharing resources, and donating books. The focus will initially be on Grade 1 students, who are just beginning their school journey, and Grade 7 students, who are preparing for their critical final year before secondary school.

The program is funded collaboratively. Australian teachers cover their own travel costs and make a modest contribution for meals prepared by the host family. Education Is Key, supports the registration and coordination of the initiative.

“This is more than just a volunteer trip,” said Julie. “It’s about teachers supporting teachers — sharing knowledge, building capacity, and ultimately making a lasting difference in classrooms where resources are limited but the potential is great.”

Looking Ahead

The pilot program aims to expand rapidly, with a vision of becoming a permanent initiative running three times a year, with teams of four teachers supporting each participating school. Future phases will include additional schools and broaden the curriculum to include health education, focusing on healthy eating and living skills for students.

Julie and her team are calling on Australian educators who are looking to make a real-world impact, not just in education, but in the lives of children and communities who welcome the support with open arms.
